Also know as Stingy Jack, Jack O’Lantern is a mythical character from the Irish folklore, sometimes associated with Halloween.

Several centuries ago in Ireland, Stingy Jack was a drunkard known for his wickedness and manipulation. One night, the Devil visited him to punish him and condemn him to Hell. Jack trapped Satan and made him promise to never claim his soul in exchange for his release. But on his death, he was denied paradise because of his evil spirit and hell didn’t want him either because of his pact. Jack is doomed to roam the world between the planes of good and evil, with only an ember inside a hollowed turnip to light his way.

His origins could come frome from the Will O’ the wisp phenomena that were very common in Irish peat bogs. People seeing the mysterious lights in the night could believe they were Jack’s lantern. The carving of vegetables has been a common practice in British Isles. By those who made them, the lanterns were said to represent either spirits or supernatural beings, or were used to ward off evil spirits during Samhain. Later, with the waves of English and Irish immigration in North America, the turnips were quickly replaced by pumpkins for their ease of carving.

Il y a plusieurs siècles en Irlande, Stingy Jack était un ivrogne connu pour sa méchanceté et ses manipulations. Une nuit, le Diable lui rendit visite pour le punir et le condamner à l'enfer. Jack piégea Satan et lui fit promettre de ne jamais réclamer son âme en échange de sa libération. Mais à sa mort, on lui refusa le paradis à cause de son esprit maléfique ainsi que l'enfer à cause de son pacte. Jack fut alors condamné à errer dans le monde entre les plans du bien et du mal, avec pour seule lumière une braise à l'intérieur d'un navet évidé.

Ses origines pourraient provenir du phénomène de feux follets, très répandu dans les tourbières irlandaises. Les personnes qui apercevaient ces mystérieuses lumières dans la nuit pouvaient croire qu'il s'agissait de la lanterne de Jack. La sculpture de légumes est une pratique courante dans les îles britanniques. Pour ceux qui les fabriquaient, les lanternes étaient censées représenter des esprits ou des êtres surnaturels, ou étaient utilisées pour éloigner les mauvais esprits pendant Samhain. Plus tard, avec les vagues d'immigration anglaise et irlandaise en Amérique du Nord, les navets ont rapidement été remplacés par des citrouilles, plus faciles à sculpter.
