Le Dahu (or Dahut) is an imaginary wild animal living in the various mountainous areas of France. It is also known by many names throughout the country as the Dairi in the Jura, the Darou in the Vosges or the Tamarro in the Pyrenees.
Apart from its resemblance to a species of cattle half-chamois half-ibex, the characteristic aspect of the Dahu lies in the fact that it has two side legs shorter than the other, in order to better stand on the mountainous slopes. This particular environment would have influenced its physical evolution over the generations in order to facilitate its movements while forcing it to always move in the same direction and on the same side of the mountain, without being able to turn around. This animal is very difficult to observe because of its great discretion and its fearful nature.
The existence of Dahu is generally evoked in rural areas and by joke to particularly naive people or to city dwellers little aware of the mountain and forest fauna. Some mountaineers even invite these people to a Dahu hunt. According to them, it would be enough to surprise the animal in the middle of the night by whistling. In the rush, it would turn, before losing its balance and descending the slope. The « novice » would then have only to wait peacefully at the bottom of the mountain and pick it up once the creature reached its level. After waiting for hours, the poor person fooled by the locals ended up returning empty-handed.

Le Dahu (ou Dahut) est un animal sauvage imaginaire vivant dans les diverses zones montagneuses de France. Il est également connu sous de nombreux nom à travers le pays comme le Dairi dans le Jura, le Darou dans les Vosges ou le Tamarro dans les Pyrénées.
Hormis sa ressemblance avec une espèce de bovidé mi-chamois mi-bouquetin, l’aspect caractéristique du Dahu réside dans le fait qu’il possède deux pattes latérales plus courtes que les deux autres, afin de mieux se tenir dans les pentes montagneuses. Cet environnement particulier aurait en effet influé sur son évolution physique au fil des générations afin de faciliter ses déplacements tout en l’obligeant de toujours se déplacer dans la même direction et sur le même côté de la montagne, sans pouvoir faire demi-tour. Cet animal est très difficile à observer à cause de sa grande discrétion et de sa nature craintive.
L’existence du Dahu est généralement évoquée en milieu rural et par plaisanterie auprès de personnes particulièrement naïves ou auprès de citadins peu au fait de la faune montagnarde et forestière. Il arrive même à certains montagnards d’inviter ces personnes à une chasse au Dahu. Selon leurs dires, il suffirait de surprendre en pleine nuit l’animal en le sifflant. Dans la précipitation, celui-ci se retournerait, avant de perdre l’équilibre et de dévaler la pente. Le « novice » n’aurait alors plus qu’à attendre paisiblement en bas de la montagne et de le ramasser une fois la créature arrivée à son niveau. Après avoir attendu pendant des heures, la pauvre personne bernée par les locaux finit par rentrer bredouille.
