The Moddey Dhoo is a phantom black hound of the Manx folklore that reputedly haunted Peel Castle on the west coast of the Isle of Man. This black dog is described as big as a calf, with long shaggy hair and with eyes like pewter plates.

It has been frequently seen in every room of the castle, particularly in the guard-chamber during the night and disappears as soon as the morning dawned. There used to be a passage connected to the Peel Castle, traversing the church grounds, leading to the apartment of the Captain of the Guard. One night, a drunken guard went there alone and was later found ghastly frightened. He was unable to share what he had seen, and died three days later. After the haunting, the passage was sealed up and never used again. Since this day, the dog is never seen again.

In the English folklore, the Black Dog is a populare spectral hellhound who have been reported from almost all the countries of England like the Barghest, Padfoot or Tchico. He is often connected with the Devil and is sometimes an omen of death.

Le Moddey Dhoo est un chien fantôme du folklore mannois qui aurait hanté le château de Peel sur la côte ouest de l'île de Man. Ce chien noir est décrit comme étant gros comme un veau, avec de longs poils hirsutes et des yeux comme des plats en étain.

Il a été fréquemment vu dans toutes les pièces du château, en particulier dans la salle des gardes, pendant la nuit, et disparaissait dès l'aube. Il existait autrefois un passage relié au château de Peel, traversant le terrain de l'église et menant à l'appartement du capitaine de la garde. Dans le folklore anglais, le chien noir est un chien d'enfer spectral populaire qui a été signalé dans presque tous les pays d'Angleterre, comme le Barghest, Padfoot ou Tchico. Il est souvent associé au diable et est parfois un présage de mort.
