Tesso is a vengeful spirit of a monk called Raigō who lived during the Heian period. According to the legend, the Emperor, who having no heir, approached Raigō and asked him to pray for a child. Raigō prayed long and hard, when finally a royal son was born. The grateful Emperor promised to give the abbot anything he wished in return for his prayers. Raigō asked then the construction of a new temple so he could train new priests. The Emperor gladly agreed, however Enryaku-ji a powerful rival temple, used great pressure on the Emperor. who reneged on his promise to Raigō. When the monk passed away, his heart full of rage towards the unfaithful Emperor and the rival monastery transformed him into a gigantic rat spirit driven by pure vengeance. Its body was as hard as stone and its teeth and claws as strong as iron. The monstrous Tesso summoned a massive army of rats to destroy everything in the Enryaku-ji temple.

Tesso est l'esprit vengeur d'un moine appelé Raigō ayant vécu durant la période Heian. Selon la légende, l'Empereur, qui n'avait pas d'héritier, demanda à Raigō de prier pour un enfant. Raigō pria longtemps et durement, quand finalement un fils royal naquit. L'Empereur, reconnaissant, promit de donner à l'abbé tout ce qu'il souhaitait en échange de ses prières. Raigō demanda alors la construction d'un nouveau temple pour pouvoir former de nouveaux prêtres. L'empereur accepta volontiers, mais Enryaku-ji, un puissant temple rival, exerça de fortes pressions sur l'Empereur. qui renia sa promesse à Raigō. Lorsque le moine mourut, son cœur plein de rage envers l'Empereur infidèle et le monastère rival le transforma en l'esprit d'un gigantesque rat animé par la pure vengeance. Son corps était aussi dur que la pierre et ses dents et griffes aussi solides que le fer. Le monstrueux Tesso convoqua une armée massive de rats pour tout détruire dans le temple Enryaku-ji et s'attaqua à tous ceux qui lui avait causé du tort.
