La Ganipote (Galipote or Galipotte) is a legendary creature from the folklore of the provinces of central-west and south-west France.
Malevolent and protean creature linked to the world of witchcraft, it would haunt the dark woods, roaming the countryside on moonless nights or prowling around inhabited dwellings during the twilight. Related to the werewolf, this monster is able to not only take the appearance of a wolf, but also that of other animals related to the night (cf: the Voirloup). But what distinguishes him the most from other lycanthropes is his fun to terrorize passers by jumping violently on their backs, all claws out, before clinging to it and weighing with all his weight until they perish suffocated. On the contrary, the Ganipote can sometimes take on a harmless aspect in order to invite children to follow it in order to better lose them. In almost all stories, the Ganipote is a human being temporarily transformed into an animal or having in some way, incarnated as an animal during the night, because of a curse or witchcraft. According to the versions, certain transformations evoke an exit of the soul of the cursed person, and its incarnation in the body of an animal, or of a duplication of the body. Others report a pure and simple metamorphosis of the victim. Originally, the werewolf in France was mainly seen as demons who came to terrorize the people under the command of the Devil and the accounts of involuntary transformations were rare. The modern myths of the full moon and bites were not yet topical and most often it is a divine curse for having transgressed a prohibition or for having committed a serious sin.

La Ganipote (Galipote ou Galipotte) est une créature légendaire issue du folklore des provinces du centre-ouest et du sud-ouest de la France.
Créature malfaisante et protéiforme liée au monde de la sorcellerie, elle hanterait les bois sombres, parcourant la campagne les nuits sans lune ou rôdant autour des demeures habitées pendant le crépuscule. Apparentée au loup-garou, ce monstre est capable de prendre non seulement l'apparence d'un loup, mais aussi celle d’autres animaux liés à la nuit (cf : le Voirloup). Mais ce qui le distingue le plus des autres lycanthropes est son amusement à terroriser les passants en leur sautant violemment sur le dos, toutes griffes dehors, avant de s'y agripper et de peser de tout son poids jusqu'à ce qu'ils périssent étouffés. Parfois, la Ganipote peut au contraire prendre un aspect inoffensif afin d’inviter les enfants à la suivre pour mieux les perdre. Dans presque tous les récits, la Ganipote est un être humain transformé temporairement en animal ou s'étant d'une certaine façon, incarné en animal pendant la nuit, à cause d’une malédiction ou par sorcellerie. Selon les versions, certaines transformations évoquent une sortie de l’âme de la personne maudite, et de son incarnation dans le corps d’un animal, ou d’un dédoublement du corps. D’autres font état d’une métamorphose pur et simple de la victime.
À l’origine, le loup-garou en France était surtout vu comme des démons venus terroriser le peuple sous le commandement du Diable et les récits de transformations involontaires étaient rares. Les mythes modernes de la pleine lune et des morsures n’étaient pas encore d’actualité et le plus souvent, il s'agit d'une malédiction divine pour avoir transgressé une interdiction ou pour avoir commis un péché grave.
