Vodianoï (aslo called Vodyanoy or Vodyanoi, and from Russian водяно́й , meaning « (he) from the water » or « watery ») is a male water spirit from Slavic mythology. It is said to appear as a naked old man with a frog-like face, greenish beard, and long hair, with his body covered in algae and muck, usually covered in black fish scales. He has webbed paws instead of hands, a fish's tail, and eyes that burn like red-hot coals. He usually rides along his river on a half-sunken log, making loud splashes. Consequently, he is often dubbed "grandfather" or "forefather" by the local people. When angered, the Vodianoï breaks dams, washes down water mills, and drowns people and animals. He would drag people down to his underwater dwelling to serve him as slaves. We can find him in The Witcher saga.

Un Vodianoï (aussi appelé Vodyanoy ou Vodyanoi, et du Russe водяно́й qui signifie « triton ») est un personnage de la mythologie slave qui vit dans l’eau. En Russie, c’est un esprit malveillant dont la principale fonction est de noyer les gens et les animaux, puis de capturer et stocker leurs âmes dans des petits bocaux. Ils ressemblent aux humains mais avec une peau verdâtre et ils ont des nageoires aux pieds. Ils parlent le langage des animaux aquatiques et celui des humains. Certains sont supposés avoir plusieurs centaines d’années. Ils aiment fumer la pipe en méditant, assis au bord de l’eau ou sur des branches proches. On peut le retrouver dans la saga The witcher.
