La Vouivre (the Wyvern) is a legendary bipedal winged serpentine creature, or a winged snake and is widespread in Western Europe, especially in Franche-Comté, in the Jura or in Switzerland. Its name comes from the Latin « vipera » (viper) which was altered into « wipera » under the influence of Germanic.
Unlike the English wyvern, which is closer to the closer to the classic dragon (except the number of legs), the French Vouivre refers to an animal with a snake body and bat wings, a young naked woman (or a fairy) living in the middle of the marshes, or a mixture of both. But what best characterizes this creature is none other than the ruby it holds on its forehead (sometimes replacing its eyes). The creature keeps it fiercely like a treasure. Legend has it that this precious stone would give fortune and power to whoever took it.
As a folk monster, the Vouivre has been an integral part of the heritage of several European countries, including France, England and Switzerland, for centuries. But it’s in Franche-Comté that lies the real origin of his legend. The beast is so present that there are many stories about it, all over the region. One of them tells that at the beginning of Lake Genin (Ain), there was a castle inhabited by a princess of great cruelty. One day, she received a visit from a lady who wanted to teach her good manners. Guessing that her visitor was speaking against her, the princess threw her out, but the mysterious lady turned out to be a fairy. As punishment, the poor woman was turned into a Vouivre and from that day, she would haunt the depths of the lake. Feared by all, it would have the reputation of drowning and devouring the reckless who dare to approach the water.

La Vouivre (wyvern ou encore guivre) est une créature fantastique prenant la forme d’un dragon bipède ou d’un serpent ailé. Elle est très répandue dans l’Ouest de l’Europe, notamment dans la Franche-Comté, dans le Jura ou encore en Suisse. Son nom viendrait du latin « vipera » (vipère) qui fut altéré en « wipera » sous l’influence du germanique.
Contrairement au wyvern anglais, qui se rapproche plus du dragon classique (hormis le nombre de pattes), la Vouivre française désigne un animal possédant un corps de serpent et des ailes de chauve-souris, une jeune femme nue vivant au milieu des marais, ou un mélange des deux. Mais ce qui caractérise le mieux cette créature n’est autre que l’escarboucle que celle-ci détient sur son front, (remplaçant parfois ses yeux). La créature la garde farouchement comme un trésor car la légende raconte que cette pierre précieuse donnerait fortune et pouvoir à celui qui s’en emparerait.
En tant que monstre folklorique, la vouivre fait partie intégrante, et ce depuis des siècles du patrimoine de plusieurs pays européens, notamment en France, en Angleterre et en Suisse. Mais c’est en Franche-Comté que se trouve le réel noyau de sa légende. La bête y est si présente qu’il existe de nombreuses histoires à son sujet aux quatre coins de la région. L’une d’entre elles raconte qu’au abord du lac Genin (Ain), se trouvait un château habité par une princesse d’une grande cruauté. Elle reçut un jour, la visite d’une dame qui voulut lui apprendre les bonnes mœurs. Devinant que sa visiteuse parlait contre elle, la princesse la fit jeter dehors, mais la mystérieuse dame s’avérait être en réalité une fée. En punition, la pauvre femme fut transformée en vouivre et depuis ce jour, elle hanterait les profondeurs du lac. Redoutée de tous, elle aurait la réputation de noyer et dévorer les imprudents qui osent s’approcher de l’eau.
