Bauk (Баук in Serbian) is an animal-like creature from Southern Slavic beliefs, especially from Serbian mythology. Parents used to scare children with him. Word ''bauljati'' is used when somebody walks weirdly. Bauk had weird walking and lived in dark places, in holes or abandoned houses from where he preys upon humans and eats them. The only way to banish bauk is to use light or noise. Interpretation of the bauk's attributes leads to the conclusion that the bauk is actually a description of real bears, which were already regionally extinct in some parts of Serbia and known only as legend. The English word that is close to Bauk is ''ogre''.

Bauk (Баук en serbe) est une bête monstrueuse issu des croyances slaves, en particulier de la mythologie serbe. Les parents avaient l’habitude d’effrayer les enfants avec lui. Le mot 'bauljati' est généralement utilisé quand quelqu’un marche bizarrement. Bauk marcherait bizarrement et vivrait dans des endroits sombres, dans des trous ou des maisons abandonnées d’où il s’attaquerait aux humains pour les manger. La seule façon de bannir le bauk est d’utiliser la lumière ou le bruit. L’interprétation des attributs du bauk conduit à la conclusion que le bauk est en fait une description de vrais ours, qui étaient déjà éteints régionalement dans certaines parties de la Serbie et connus seulement comme légende. Le mot français qui pourrait se rapprocher le plus de Bauk est ''ogre'.
