Nav is used as a name for the souls of the dead in Slavic mythology. As it shared name with « Nav », the slavic realm of dead, this word was a general name for demons arising out of the souls of tragic and premature deaths, killers, warlocks, the murdered and the Drowned Dead. They were said to be hostile and unfavourable towards humans, being jealous of life. According to folk tales, the nawie usually took the form of black birds with baby heads who attacked pregnant women an children. They also could attack and steal milk from cattle.

Le mot Nav est utilisé comme nom pour designer les âmes des morts dans la mythologie slave. Partageant son nom avec « Nav », le royaume des morts slave, ce mot était désignait généralement les âmes démoniaques issues des morts tragiques et prématurées, des tueurs, des morts assassinés et des noyés. On disait qu’ils étaient hostiles envers les vivants qu’ils jalousaient. Selon les contes populaires, les Nawie prennent généralement la forme d’oiseaux noirs avec des têtes de bébé. Ils s’attaqueraient aux femmes enceintes, aux enfants, et au bétail à qui ils volaient aussi le lait et le sang.
