Le Goubelin (goublin or gobelins) is a creature related to Normandy, more particularly in the Nord-Cotentin region.
Like his English cousin the Hobgoblin, it’s described as a friendly familiar demon rather devoted to the service of man. This kind of mischievous and mischievous elf, without being really wicked, would have the ability to transform into all kinds of animals and even into a human being. It is said that every Norman home would have one and some even claim that its presence would indicate the proximity of a treasure. It’s the one who hides our keys, makes objects disappear or slams doors and shutters. Able also to speak, the Goubelin likes to mingle with the conversations of men without them noticing it. Many stories are told around these little beings. It is said, for example, that one of them lived at Fort d'Omonville in Manche. He often appeared there in the form of a white sheep or a small dog and amused himself by playing tricks on the girl of the fort, changing into a calf, a hare or a bouncing wool ball.
Originating in Scandinavian countries, this spirit of nature was most certainly brought to the region by the Viking peoples who integrated into it. Moreover, this creature is called « Drôle » in the country of Hague, by deformation of the Scandinavian « troll ». The origins of Goubelin were able to blend with European folklore, Germanic mythology and the tradition of elf and geniuses taking root in different cultures (Latin, Greek, Celtic etc…), to give the legendary goblin that we know today.

Le Goubelin (goublin ou gobelins) est une créature propre à la Normandie, plus particulièrement dans le Nord-Cotentin.
Tout comme son cousin anglais le Hobgoblin, on le décrit comme un démon familier bienveillant plutôt dévoué au service de l’homme. Cette sorte de lutin malicieux et farceur, sans être réellement méchants aurait la faculté de se transformer en toutes sortes d’animaux et même en être humain. Il est dit que chaque foyer normand en possèderait un et certains prétendent même que sa présence indiquerait la proximité d’un trésor. C’est lui qui cache nos clés, fait disparaître les objets ou fait claquer les portes et les volets. Capable aussi de parler, le Goubelin aime se mêler aux conversations des hommes sans que ceux-ci ne s’en aperçoivent. De nombreuses histoires sont rapportées autour de ces petits êtres. On raconte, par exemple, que l’un d’eux habitait au fort d’Omonville, dans la Manche. Il y apparaissait souvent sous la forme d’un mouton blanc ou d’un petit chien et s’amusait à jouer des tours à la jeune fille du fort, se changeant en veau, en lièvre ou en pelote de laine bondissante.
Originaires des pays scandinaves, cet esprit de la nature a très certainement été apporté dans la région par les peuples vikings qui s’y sont intégrés. D’ailleurs, cette créature se fait appeler « Drôles » dans le pays de la Hague, par déformation du scandinave « troll ». Les origines du Goubelin ont su se mélanger au folklore européen, à la mythologie germanique et à la tradition des lutins et des génies prenant racine dans différentes cultures (latine, grecque, celtique etc…), pour donner le légendaire gobelin que nous connaissons aujourd’hui.
