Le Carcolh (Lou Carcolh in Gascon) is a monstrous creature belonging to the folklore of the department of Landes and specific to the city of Hastingues.
It is described as a large, vicious snake, coming from the underworld, similar to a snail with a large shell and possessing horrible tentacles that he uses to catch his victims in order to devour them. This monster would have the reputation of living in a cave under Hastingues, leaving behind him long trails of drool, indicating his presence. It is said that in 1523 when the Spanish invaded it, the inhabitants hid their treasures in the ground teeming with caves of the city. Legend has it that several Spanish soldiers would have found the entrance to the tunnels but would never have returned.
Some believe this creature was invented to protect the city and its riches from invaders. Hastingues was also built on a hill with a rounded shape, reminiscent of a snail shell. This particular appearance might have greatly favored belief in this filthy beast.

Le Carcolh (Lou Carcolh en gascon) est une créature monstrueuse appartenant au folklore du département des Landes et propre à la ville de Hastingues.
Il est décrit comme un grand serpent visqueux, venu des enfers, semblable à un escargot avec une grosse coquille et possédant d’horribles tentacules qu’il utilise pour attraper ses victimes afin de les dévorer. Ce monstre aurait la réputation de vivre dans une grotte sous Hastingues, laissant derrière lui de longues trainées de baves, indiquant sa présence. On raconte qu’en 1523 lorsque les Espagnoles l’envahirent, les habitants cachèrent leurs trésors dans le sol constellé de cavernes de la ville. La légende raconte que plusieurs soldats espagnols auraient trouvé l’entrée des souterrains mais n’en seraient jamais revenus.
Certains pense que cette créature aurait été inventée pour protéger la ville et ses richesses des envahisseurs. De plus, Hastingues fut construite sur une colline à la forme arrondie, rappelant celle d’une coquille d’escargot. Cette apparence particulière pourrait avoir grandement favoriser la croyance en cette bête immonde.
