Poroniec is a hostile and malicious demon from Slavic mythology. They were believed to come into existence from stillborn fetuses, but also from improperly buried remains of children who had died during infancy. Porońce were associated with many taboos regarding pregnant women, such as prohibition of drawing water from the well, prohibition of leaving home with an infant and prohibition of engaging in sexual intercourse. Stillborn fetus did not turn into a poroniec if it was buried under the threshold of the house. Instead, it turned into a kłobuk, a protective house spirit. We can find him in « The Witcher 3 : Wild Hunt » under the name of botchling.

Poroniec est un démon hostile et malveillant du folklore des pays slaves, notamment en Pologne. Il a la réputation de naître du corps des fétus morts-né, ou bien des restes mal enterrés et donc dé-consacrés des enfants morts en bas âge. Les Porońce sont liés à beaucoup de tabous autour des femmes enceintes. On les interdisait de puiser l’eau du puits, de quitter la maison avec un nourrisson, et de se livrer à des rapports sexuels. Les fœtus mort-né ne se transforment pas en Poroniec s’ils sont enterré sous le seuil de la maison. Au lieu de ça, ils deviennent des esprits protecteurs de maison appelés kłobuk. Dans « The Witcher 3 : Wild Hunt », on retrouve cette créature sous le nom de Couvin.
