La Coulobre, was a fantastic creature which lived in the source Fontaine-de-Vaucluse (fountain of Vaucluse) in the Sorgue river in Provence.
It was a winged creature, half salamander, half dragon whose ugliness prevented it from finding a husband. Consumed by shame and loneliness, the monster remained hidden in the source and waited for nightfall to come out to feed and terrorize the inhabitants of the village. These people then turned to a hermit (or a bishop according to the versions) called Véran who struck down the beast with his faith. Terribly injured, the Coulobre would’ve flown away before crashing into the Alps. A village was built at the place of its fall and was nammed Saint-Véran in tribute to the hero of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse.

La Coulobre est une créature fantastique qui hantait autre fois la fontaine de Vaucluse, la source de la rivière de la Sorgue en Provence.

C’était une créature ailée, moitié salamandre, moitié dragon, qui vivait dans l’exsurgence de la Sorgue, mais dont l’extrême laideur l’empêchait de se trouver un mari. Rongée par la honte et la solitude, le monstre restait alors caché et attendait la tombée de la nuit pour sortir de sa grotte pour aller se nourrir, terrorisant au passage les habitant du village de Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Ces derniers se tournèrent alors vers un ermite (ou évêque selon les versions) nommé Véran qui terrassa la bête d’un signe de croix. Terriblement blessée, la Coulobre se serait envolée au loin avant de s’écraser dans les Alpes. Un village fut bâti à l’endroit même de sa chute et fut baptisé Saint-Véran en hommage au héros de Fontaine-de-Vaucluse.
