Strzyga (Polish pronunciation « stʂɨɡa ») is usually a female demon from Slavic mythology. It is somewhat similar to a vampire. People who were born with two hearts, two souls, and two sets of teeth were believed to be strzygi. Somnambulics, newborn childs with already developed teeth, or people without armpit hair could also be seen as ones. When a person was identified as a strzyga, they were chased away from human dwelling places. It is said that strzygi usually died at a young age, but, according to belief, only one of their two souls would pass to the afterlife; the other soul was believed to cause the deceased strzyga to come back to life and prey upon other living beings. These undead creatures were believed to fly at night in a form of an owl and attack night-time travelers and people who had wandered off into the woods at night, sucking out their blood and eating their insides. Strzyga (prononciation polonaise « stʂɨɡa ») est généralement un démon féminin similaire à un vampire de la mythologie slave. Les personnes nées avec deux coeurs, deux âmes, et deux rangées de dents sont considérés comme des strzygi, tout comme les somnambuliques, les nouveau-nés avec des dents déjà développées, ou les personnes sans poils d’aisselles. Lorsqu’une personne a été identifiée comme étant une strzyga, elle est chassée des lieux d’habitation humaine. Il est dit que les strzygi meurt généralement à un jeune âge, mais, selon la croyance, seulement une de leurs deux âmes passerait à l’au-delà. L’autre âme permettant au strzyga décédé de revenir à la vie pour s’ataquer aux vivants. On croyait que ces morts-vivants volaient la nuit sous la forme d’un hibou et attaquaient les voyageurs et les gens erant dans les bois la nuit, suçant leur sang et mangeant leurs entrailles.
