The Ispolin (from Bulgarian исполин) is a legendary giant in Bulgarian mythology. According to the myth and region, ispoloni were believed to have inhabited the Earth before humans. Bulgarians believed that God created ispolini after his first creations, the dwarves, failed to survive because of their low stature. Various myths describe them as up to three meters tall and having huge heads, while other legends portray ispoloni as possessing three heads and a single eye on their forehead, or a single leg. Similar to the Cyclops from Greek mythology, Ispoloni were believed to have inhabited the prehistoric mountains. Their voices were thought so powerful that they were able to communicate between each other even when they were standing on far-away mountain tops. However, the legend goes, God destroyed ispolini because he judged that they were, just like dwarves, not suited for life on Earth. In many regions of Bulgaria, large heaps of stones, often ruins of ancient buildings, are interpreted as ispolin graveyards.

L’Ispolin (du bulgare исполин) est un géant légendaire de la mythologie bulgare. Selon le mythe de fondation bulgare, les Ispolini étaient la deuxième génération à habiter la terre, la troisième étant les Hommes et la première ayant été les Nains qui moururent victimes de leur petite taille, incapables de se protéger des animaux sauvages et de cultiver la terre. À l’inverse des Nains, les Ispolini sont décrit comme faisant trois mètres de haut avec d’immenses têtes, ou possédant trois têtes et un seul œil sur leur front. Semblables aux Cyclopes de la mythologie grecque, les Ispolini habitaient des montagnes préhistoriques et avaient des voix si puissantes qu’ils pouvaient communiquer entre eux même s’ils étaient très éloignés. Dieu détruisit finalement les Ispolini car il pensait qu’ils n’étaient pas fait pour vivre sur terre à cause de leur trop grande taille. Depuis en Bulgarie, les grands tas de pierre sont parfois considérés comme étant leur tombeau.
