Tenjō kudari has the appearance of a naked, ugly, old woman with long disheveled hair. It spends most of its time in hiding, living in the narrow crawlspace between the ceiling and the roof. Every so often, in the middle of the night, it crawls out from the ceiling, upside-down, to scare people. In old Japan, the space above the ceiling was connected with a lot of superstitions about dead bodies rolling about or women being confined like prisoners.

Un Tenjō kudari a l'apparence d'une vieille femme nue, laide et aux longs cheveux ébouriffés. Elle passe la plupart de son temps à se cacher, vivant dans l'étroit vide sanitaire entre le plafond et le toit. De temps en temps, au milieu de la nuit, elle sort du plafond, la tête en bas, pour effrayer les gens. Dans l'ancien Japon, l'espace au-dessus du plafond était lié à de nombreuses superstitions concernant des cadavres s'y cachant ou des femmes enfermées comme des prisonnières.
